Padres select RHP Mat Latos; designate RHP Josh Banks for assignment

San Diego, CA -- The San Diego Padres today announced they have selected right-handed pitcher Mat Latos from Double-A San Antonio and designated right-handed pitcher Josh Banks for assignment. Executive Vice President/General Manager Kevin Towers made the announcement.

Latos, 21, is slated to start and make his Major League debut tomorrow against the Rockies. He has split his season between Single-A Fort Wayne and Double-A San Antonio, combining to go 8-1 with a 1.38 ERA (11 ER/72.0 IP), 73 strikeouts and a .168 opponent average in 13 games (11 starts). Latos was named the Padres Minor League Pitcher of the Month for May after he combined to go 4-0 with a 0.50 ERA (2 ER/36.1 IP) and 38 strikeouts in six appearances (four starts) between Fort Wayne and San Antonio.

Originally signed by San Diego as an 11th-round selection in the 2006 First-Year Player Draft and invited to Major League Spring Training this year, Latos has gone 12-8 with a 2.49 ERA (51 ER/184.1 IP) and 216 strikeouts in 44 career minor league games (35 starts) since making his professional debut in 2007.

Banks, 27, appeared in six games (three starts) for the Padres, going 1-1 with a 7.15 ERA (18 ER/22.2 IP). He has also appeared in 14 games (eight starts) for Triple-A Portland, posting a 3-4 record and 2.47 ERA (17 ER/62.0 IP). Over parts of three Major League seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays (2007) and Padres (2008-09), Banks is 4-7 with a 5.38 ERA (69 ER/115.1 IP) in 26 games (18 starts).
