Houston Astros left-hander Wandy Rodriguez, who posted a perfect 4-0 record last month, has been voted National League Pitcher of the Month for July. This marks Wandy's first monthly honor of his career.

In five starts last month, Rodriguez posted a 4-0 record with a 0.75 ERA, allowing just three earned runs with 34 strikeouts over 36.0 innings. The 30-year-old recorded the lowest July ERA for a starting pitcher in Astros history, besting Andy Pettitte's 0.90 mark in 2005. In addition, it was the second-lowest ERA in the Majors during the month behind Clayton Kershaw (0.71) of the Dodgers. On July 8th, the second-round selection in the 1999 First-Year Player Draft threw a complete-game shutout, allowing five hits and one walk against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Minute Maid Park, matching his career and season-highs with 11 strikeouts in the outing, previously set on May 14th against the Colorado Rockies. Rodriguez, who tossed 18.0 consecutive scoreless innings from July 2nd-21st, followed his shutout with 6.0 shutout innings against the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium on July 16th. Rodriguez, a Dominican Republic native, is currently 10-6 on the season and ranks fifth in the N.L. with a 2.63 ERA and seventh with 128 strikeouts.

Other pitchers receiving votes were Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw, whose MLB-best 0.71 ERA accompanied a 3-0 record, and Colorado's Jorge De La Rosa, who posted a perfect 5-0 record with a 2.50 ERA in five appearances last month. Others receiving consideration were St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Adam Wainwright, who posted a 4-1 record with a 1.17 ERA, including a complete game, and San Francisco's Matt Cain, who went 3-0 and compiled a 0.94 ERA in 38.1 innings pitched. Also considered were Chris Carpenter (4-0, 1.75 ERA, 36.0 IP, 25 SO) of the Cardinals; Philadelphia's Joe Blanton (3-0, 1.21 ERA, 29.2 ERA, 22 SO); and Tim Lincecum (3-1, 2.08 ERA, 1 CG, 51 SO) of the Giants.

Wandy Rodriguez will receive a specially-designed trophy and a Sharp AQUOS full HD LCD-TV to commemorate his Pitcher of the Month performance.
