Florida Marlins outfielder Chris Coghlan has been voted the August recipient of the Gillette presents National League Rookie of the Month Award.

Coghlan compiled a Major League-best 47 hits in 28 games during August while batting .385 (47-122), and led all N.L. rookies with 21 runs scored. Coghlan's 47 hits established a Marlins record for a single month, and joined him with Wally Moon (52 hits - July, 1954) as the only N.L. rookies in the last 60 years to record 47 or more hits in a calendar month. In addition, the 47 hits were the most by a Major League rookie in one month since Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki had 51 in August 2001. The 24-year-old added four home runs, 18 RBI, six doubles, three triples and one stolen base while posting a .582 slugging percentage and a .449 on-base percentage. Chris began the month with a career-high 12-game hitting streak, collecting at least two hits in each of the first eight games, and in nine of the 12 overall. He became the first Major League rookie to post two or more hits in eight consecutive games since Cincinnati's Dan Driessen in 1973. During the 12-game stretch, the Palm Harbor, Florida native hit .436 (24-55) with a home run, four doubles, a triple and nine RBI. The 36th overall selection in the 2006 First-Year Player Draft collected at least one hit in 25 of his 28 games, and posted 15 multi-hit games during the month along with four multi-RBI performances. On August 27th against the N.L. East rival New York Mets, Coghlan went 3-for-4 with two solo home runs, his first career multi-homer game. Coghlan, who currently has a 10-game hitting streak, is batting .302 on the season with nine home runs and 38 RBI.

Other rookies receiving votes included Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen (.304, 8 HR, 19 RBI, 6 SB); Philadelphia Phillies left-hander J.A. Happ (3-1, 1.67 ERA, 37.2 IP, 21 SO); and right-handed pitcher Tommy Hanson (4-1, 2.93 ERA, 27.2 IP, 32 SO) of the Atlanta Braves.
