Ryan Howard of the Philadelphia Phillies has been named the Sharp Presents the National League Player of the Month for August. This marks Ryan's fourth career monthly award (previous: 09/2008).

The first baseman hit .299 (32-107) with six doubles, one triple and 18 runs scored. Ryan led the N.L. with 11 home runs and tied for the M.L.-lead with 33 RBI for August. The 29-year-old also posted a .682 slugging percentage and a .356 on-base percentage. On August 14th, Howard blasted a game-winning solo home run in the ninth inning to give Philadelphia a 3-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field. Ryan's home run moved him into seventh on the Phillies all-time homer list with 205. Entering today's game, the 2006 N.L. Most Valuable Player has 214 career home runs, four shy of gaining sole possession of sixth place on the club's all-time list. On August 16th, Ryan captured the series win for the Phillies as he knocked in all four runs with his two home-run performance against the Braves in a 4-1 victory. The multi-homer effort tied the left-handed slugger for third on the Phillies all-time multi-HR game list with 20. Howard collected three multi-home run games in August to bring his career total to 22, just one shy of tying Hall of Famer Chuck Klein for second on the club's list. During the month of August, the two-time All-Star reached 30 homers and 100 RBI for the fourth consecutive season, tying Klein for the most in franchise history. Entering play today, Howard is hitting .275 with 37 home runs, ranking him fourth in the Majors, and has already achieved a career-high 31 doubles and five stolen bases.

Other players receiving votes were Matt Diaz (.404, 6 HR, 18 RBI) of the Atlanta Braves; Florida's Chris Coghlan (.385, 4 HR, 18 RBI); Matt Holliday (.303, 7 HR, 24 RBI) of the St. Louis Cardinals; Milwaukee's Prince Fielder (.271, 11 HR, 28 RBI); Andre Ethier (.333, 6 HR, 21 RBI) of the Los Angeles Dodgers; Washington's Ryan Zimmerman (.350, 7 HR, 23 RBI); Hanley Ramirez (.395, 3 HR, 16 RBI, 8 SB) of the Florida Marlins; and Albert Pujols (.319, 7 HR, 18 RBI) of the St. Louis Cardinals.
