Atlanta Braves pitcher Javier Vazquez has been named National League Player of the Week presented by Bank of America for the period ending September 13th. Bank of America is the Official Bank of Major League Baseball and the only place where you can get your favorite Club logo on checks, check cards or credit cards. For more information on MLB® banking, visit bankofamerica.com/MLB.

In two outings last week, Javier posted a perfect 2-0 record and a 1.13 ERA while leading the Majors with 17 strikeouts in his 16.0 innings pitched. During that span, the veteran right-hander held opposing batters to a .182 batting average and walked only four. On September 8th, the 33-year-old notched his 12th win of the season while throwing 7.0 shutout innings against the Houston Astros. He helped his own cause at the plate by recording two hits for his 13th career multi-hit game. On Sunday, Javier turned in an eight-strikeout complete game effort en route to a 9-2 win over the N.L. Central-leading St. Louis Cardinals. He extended his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 15.0 before allowing two runs in the ninth inning of the victory, which sealed a three-game sweep for the Braves. The Ponce, Puerto Rico native has already surpassed his 2008 season total of 200 strikeouts, marking his third consecutive and fifth career 200-strikeout season. Only Randy Johnson (13), Pedro Martinez (9), John Smoltz (5) and Johan Santana (5) have five or more 200-plus strikeout seasons among active players. This marks Javier's second career weekly award (previous: 8/18/2008) and first while pitching in the National League.

Other noteworthy performances for the week include Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero, who tied for the Major League-lead with a .500 batting average, and Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Raul Ibañez, who led the Majors with four home runs and 26 total bases. Also considered were Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Russell Martin, who led the N.L. with nine RBI, and his teammate, first baseman James Loney, who slammed three home runs and collected eight RBI.

Tourneau, the world's largest watch store, will award Javier Vazquez with a luxury Swiss Timepiece, suitably engraved, in recognition of his accomplishment as the National League Player of the Week presented by Bank of America.
