BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today announced the promotion of two senior executives: Sam Kennedy to Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer, and Jonathan Gilula to Executive Vice President/Business Affairs. Previously, Kennedy served as Executive Vice President/Chief Sales & Marketing Officer and Gilula served as Senior Vice President/Business Affairs.
Today's announcement formalizes a restructuring of Red Sox Front Office executive leadership following the departure of Mike Dee, former Red Sox Chief Operating Officer who this summer accepted the position of Chief Executive Officer of the Miami Dolphins and Dolphin Stadium. Both Kennedy and Gilula will report directly to Red Sox President/CEO Larry Lucchino.
"Sam Kennedy and Jonathan Gilula have track records of leadership and accomplishment, and have earned the confidence of John Henry, Tom Werner, and the team ownership, as well as the members of the front office. Each has demonstrated that rare ability to balance the hectic day-to-day responsibilities of running complex operations with the demands of developing strategies that will ensure the long-term growth of the organization," said Larry Lucchino, President/CEO. "Both also possess traits that are paramount to success in New England baseball - great experience and energy, dedication, deep respect for the history of the franchise, the aura of Fenway Park, and the passion of Red Sox Nation."
In Kennedy's new role as Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer, he will oversee Corporate Sponsorship, Ticketing, Broadcasting, Marketing, Fenway Enterprises and Client Services. Kennedy has also been named President of Fenway Sports Group (FSG), a wholly-owned subsidiary of New England Sports Ventures, the parent company of both the Red Sox and NESN.
As Executive Vice President/Business Affairs, Gilula will oversee Ballpark and Event Operations, Fan Services, Fenway Park and surrounding real estate activities, and Spring Training/Florida Operations. In his new capacity, Gilula will manage several special projects on behalf of the Club, including the completion of the improvements to Fenway Park and the development of the new Red Sox spring training complex in Lee Co., Florida. He will also manage key business partnerships including ARAMARK, Fenway Park's concessionaire and Twins Enterprise, operator of the Official Team Store.
In addition to their direct lines of responsibility, Kennedy and Gilula will provide leadership, guidance and business expertise across all areas of the organization.
Kennedy joined the Red Sox in 2002 after five seasons with the San Diego Padres, where he tripled sponsorship revenues and played a key role in the sales and marketing strategy for the Padres' new downtown ballpark, Petco Park. A graduate of Trinity College, he was raised in Brookline and now resides in Wellesley with his wife, Amanda, and their two children.
Gilula also joined the Red Sox in 2002 after four seasons with the San Diego Padres, where he served as Director of Ballpark Development and coordinated all aspects of the design and construction of the Padres new downtown ballpark, which opened in 2004. He graduated from Princeton University, and now resides in Boston.
