Seattle Mariners ace Felix Hernandez, who led the Majors with five wins last month, has been named the American League Pitcher of the Month for September. This marks the second monthly honor of his season and career.

In six starts last month, Hernandez posted a perfect 5-0 record with a 1.35 ERA and 32 strikeouts while allowing just 33 hits through 46.2 innings pitched. On September 18th, the right-hander tossed his seventh career complete game, and second of 2009, yielding just one earned run with one walk and three strikeouts against the New York Yankees en route to a 3-2 win at Safeco Field. The Valencia, Venezuela native recorded his 200th strikeout of the season on September 24th at Toronto, becoming just the fifth Mariners pitcher to record at least 200 punch-outs in a single season. In addition, Hernandez joined Randy Johnson (1995, 97) as the second pitcher in club history to post a season of 200.0 inning, 200 strikeouts, 15 wins and a sub 3.00 ERA. The 2009 All-Star finished the season with a 19-5 record, tying for the Major League-lead in wins, and an American League-best .792 winning percentage. Felix finished the season with a 2.49 ERA in 34 starts, including a Major League-best 1.99 ERA on the road, and he ranked fourth in the A.L. with 217 strikeouts over 238.2 innings pitched.

Others receiving consideration were Kansas City ace Zack Greinke (3-0, 0.55 ERA, 35 SO), August's A.L. Pitcher of the Month Award winner CC Sabathia (4-0, 1.29 ERA, 36 SO) of the Yankees and right-hander Roy Halladay (4-2, 1.47 ERA, 4 CG, 3 SHO, 43 SO) of the Toronto Blue Jays. Felix Hernandez will receive a specially designed trophy and a Sharp Aquos television to commemorate his Pitcher of the Month performance.
