Seattle Mariners outfielder Ichiro Suzuki has been selected to the 2009 American League Rawlings Gold Glove Team, announced today by the Rawlings Sporting Goods Company and Major League Baseball. The award is Ichiro's ninth consecutive Gold Glove award.

Ichiro, 36, becomes the first player to win a Gold Glove in each of his nine Major League seasons. He also becomes the 7th outfielder in Major League history to earn at least nine gold gloves in a career. Ichiro also won seven consecutive Gold Glove Awards while playing for the Orix Blue Wave in Japan. In 2009, Ichiro finished with a .988 fielding percentage, making just four errors in 326 chances this season (317 putouts).

In 1,398 games since his debut with the Mariners in 2001, Ichiro's .993 fielding percentage is the 2nd-highest among Major League outfielders (min. 540 games). He has made only 24 errors in 3,340 career chances with 83 outfield assists. His 83 outfield assists are the most in the Majors since 2001.

Today's announcement extends the streak of a Mariner winning a Gold Glove to 23 consecutive seasons, the longest current streak in the Majors. Seattle's streak dates back to 1987, when pitcher Mark Langston became the first Mariner ever to win a Gold Glove. Since 1998, the Mariners have captured 21 Gold Gloves (Ichiro - 9, Boone - 3, Olerud - 3, Griffey Jr. - 2, Cameron - 2, Beltre - 2), most in the Majors during that time span (St. Louis is 2nd with 19). The National League Gold Glove winners will be announced tomorrow.

The Rawlings Gold Glove Award is presented annually to 18 players, one for each position, in both the American and National Leagues. Winners are chosen by Major League managers and coaches. Here's a look at the complete AL Team, as announced by Major League Baseball and Rawlings:
