MIAMI, Fla. - Putting on their 'green' hats, the Florida Marlins are ready to step-up to the plate and hit a home run for the environment with the 2010 Caravan for Earth, Monday, February 8 to Friday, February 12. The week-long earth-friendly celebration will culminate with the annual Florida Marlins FanFest sponsored by Jiffy Lube on Saturday, February 13 at Sun Life Stadium.

The Marlins 2010 Caravan for Earth includes unique 'green' initiatives at various locations across South Florida, as fans will have the opportunity to join in on the fun by meeting Marlins players, coaches, office executives, Billy the Marlin and Marlins Mermaids while positively impacting their local community.

Events include a PEP rally at the TERRA Environmental Research Institute celebrating the opening of their new LEED certified gymnasium; a wildlife conservation tour at MetroZoo with the Zoo Magnet Program and Eco-Academy; a green home makeover in Little Havana with FPL, Hunt/Moss and Home Depot; a park restoration with Hands on Miami in Allapattah; and an educational tour of the Waste Management Recycling Center in Pembroke Pines with local children. The Marlins will also be emphasizing the importance of public transportation riding the Miami metromover and passing out free Cuban coffee from Café Bustelo at Government Station.

"Joining forces with our local partners, Caravan for Earth is a great opportunity to improve our neighboring communities and give back to our fans," said Sean Flynn, Marlins VP of Marketing. "Each organized event is an opportunity to engage South Floridians and spread awareness about environmental issues while having fun with the help of Marlins players, Billy the Marlin and the Mermaids."

The Marlins will partner with The Leonard and Jayne Abess Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy at the University of Miami to reduce carbon emissions from vehicles during the week of Caravan. Moreover, the Marlins will offset the carbon emissions generated that week by purchasing trees and planting them across the community, thus creating a cleaner environment. Carpooling efforts and usage of hybrid vehicles will also be implemented to reduce carbon emissions.

In addition, the Florida Marlins will host exclusive fundraising events including the Mercedes-Benz of Fort Lauderdale Marlins Celebrity Golf Classic presented by Sharp Business Systems on Thursday, February 11, and the Marlins Awards Dinner Ceremony presented by Fox Sports on Friday, February 12. These elite events will feature key local figures, sports legends and more. Proceeds will benefit the Florida Marlins Community Foundation Cornerstone for Kids. Reservations for both events are available by calling (305) 623-6497.
