Chicago White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko has been named Bank of America Presents the American League Player of the Week for the period ending May 2nd. Bank of America, the Official Bank of Major League Baseball, is the presenting sponsor of the American League and National League Player of the Week Awards, which reflect Bank of America's long-standing tradition of promoting and recognizing higher standards of accomplishment.

In six games last week, Paul hit .316 (6-19) with five runs scored, 19 total bases and American League-bests in home runs (4) and RBI (10). Konerko also posted a 1.000 slugging percentage and compiled a .462 on-base percentage behind five free passes. On April 29th, the 34-year-old launched two homers late in the game, driving in four runs, rallying the White Sox to a 7-5 victory over the Texas Rangers. The performance marked his 25th career multi-homer game. Konerko is the first player in Sox history to become the fastest in the Majors to 10 home runs. On April 30th, in the first game of a three-game series against the New York Yankees, Paul took a first-inning pitch deep for a three-run homer. The blast marked the right-handed slugger's 11th in the month of April, shattering the previous club mark of 10 set by Jim Thome in 2006. The 14th overall pick in the first round of the 1994 First-Year Player Draft became the first White Sox player since Zeke Bonura (1935) to lead or share the Major League home run lead entering the month of May. Entering play today, Paul leads the Majors with 12 home runs and a .790 slugging percentage. This marks Paul's third career weekly award (last accomplished on 6/19/06).

Other noteworthy performances included Detroit Tigers rookie Austin Jackson, who led the Majors with a .500 batting average and 15 hits, while also leading the A.L. with a .545 on-base percentage. Also considered were Minnesota Twins southpaw Francisco Liriano, who posted a perfect 2-0 record and led the A.L. with 19 punchouts, and Toronto Blue Jays catcher John Buck, who had a three-homer performance on April 29th, making him the first catcher to accomplish the feat since Victor Martinez, then of the Cleveland Indians, did so on July 16th, 2004.

The Bank of America Presents the American League Player of the Week, Paul Konerko, is awarded a watch courtesy of Game Time, the leader in licensed sports watches, available at MLB.com.
