St. Louis Cardinals third baseman David Freese has been named Bank of America Presents the National League Player of the Week for the period of April 26-May 2, 2010. Bank of America, the Official Bank of Major League Baseball, is the presenting sponsor of the National League and American League Player of the Week Awards, which reflect Bank of America's long-standing tradition of promoting and recognizing higher standards of accomplishment.

Freese recorded a Major League-best 11 RBI last week, while batting .462 (12-for-26) with three home runs. The rookie also posted a .500 on-base percentage and slugged .923. His 12 hits and 24 total bases were good for second in the NL. Freese celebrated his 27th birthday on Wednesday with a two-RBI performance, going 2-for-3, and helping the Cardinals to a 6-0 win over visiting Atlanta. His six RBI in a 10-4 victory against the Braves on Thursday set a career-high and were the most by a Cardinals rookie since 1957 when MLB established the status for a rookie. His .355 batting average is tied for second in the National League and leads all NL rookies while his 16 RBI are tied for second amongst rookies in the Majors. During his current six-game hitting streak, the Missouri native has a .545 (12-for-22) average, and he has homered in each of his last three games. This is David's first career weekly award.

Other nominees this past week included Freese's Cardinals teammates Albert Pujols (.476, 7 RBI, .577 OBP) and Chris Carpenter (2-0, 1.38 ERA, 12 SO); Alfonso Soriano (.400, 4 HR, 10 RBI, 1.100 SLG) and Ryan Theriot (.419, 13 H, 6 R) of the Cubs; Florida's Hanley Ramirez (.409, 4 HR, 8 RBI, 1.000 SLG) and Josh Johnson (2-0, 1.80 ERA, 20 SO); Andre Ethier (.385, 4 HR, 10 RBI, .962 SLG) of the Dodgers; Atlanta's Jayson Heyward (.350, 3 HR, 7 RBI); Colorado's Carlos Gonzalez (.391, 10 RBI, 3 SB, .783 SLG); and David Wright (.429, 2 HR, 9 RBI) and Rod Barajas (.429, 3 HR, 1.143 SLG) of the Mets.
