Jose Bautista of the Toronto Blue Jays Named the Bank of America Presents the American League Player of the Week

Toronto Blue Jays utility player Jose Bautista has been named Bank of America Presents the American League Player of the Week for the period ending May 16th. Bank of America, the Official Bank of Major League Baseball, is the presenting sponsor of the American League and National League Player of the Week Awards, which reflect Bank of America's long-standing tradition of promoting and recognizing higher standards of accomplishment.

In six games last week, Jose hit .444 (8-18) with 20 total bases, eight RBI and tied for Major League-bests with four home runs and eight runs scored. Bautista also posted a Major League-best 1.111 slugging percentage, in addition to earning a .565 on-base percentage behind five free passes. On May 15th, the 29-year-old knocked two home runs en route to a 6-0 victory over the Texas Rangers at the Rogers Centre. Bautista's two-HR outing marked his fourth career multi-homer and third career five-RBI game, a feat he most recently accomplished on April 19th against the Kansas City Royals. In the final contest of a three-game set against the Rangers on Sunday, the native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic hit his third home run in two days, a solo shot, to solidify the 5-2 win and Toronto's third sweep of the season. The right-handed slugger's four home runs last week brought his May total to six, tying him with Ty Wigginton of the Baltimore Orioles for first in the A.L. during in the month of May. Entering play today, Bautista is tied with Toronto teammates Alex Gonzalez and Vernon Wells for third in the American League with 10 home runs, making the trio responsible for half of the club's Major League-leading 60 home runs. This marks Jose's first career weekly award.

Other noteworthy performances included Detroit Tigers rookie outfielder Brennan Boesch, who led the Majors with 13 hits and 22 total bases, while posting a .481 batting average. Also considered were Baltimore Orioles outfielder Luke Scott, who tied for the American League-best with a .500 batting average, and Cleveland Indians right-hander Jake Westbrook, who posted a perfect 2-0 record with a 1.20 ERA and 10 strikeouts.
