Detroit Tigers outfielder Brennan Boesch has been voted the May recipient of the Gillette presents American League Rookie of the Month Award. Boesch, along with teammate Austin Jackson (April's winner), became the first pair of teammates to win the award in April and May since Boston's Hideki Okajima (April) and Dustin Pedroia (May) in 2007.

Boesch led all Major League rookies with a .345 (29-for-84) batting average in 23 games during the month and tied for first with eight doubles. He also led A.L. rookies with three home runs and 15 RBI, and was tied for first in the Majors with two triples while adding a stolen base, seven runs scored and a .595 slugging percentage. The 25-year-old hit safely in 13 of 14 contests to begin the month, including a career-best eight-game hitting streak from May 10th -18th. On May 10th against the Yankees, Boesch recorded the first of two three-RBI performances during the month as he went 2-for-3 with a triple to help Detroit to a 5-4 victory on the night the Tigers organization paid tribute to the late Hall of Fame broadcaster Ernie Harwell. On May 15th against Boston, the Santa Monica, California native collected a career-high four hits, including a double and a triple with two RBI to lead the Tigers to a 7-6 victory over the Red Sox. Brennan, who was selected by the Tigers in the third round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, compiled 10 multi-hit contests in May, and reached base safely in 19 of the 23 games. Boesch collected at least one RBI in nine of his first 15 career games after making his debut on April 23rd, becoming just the 27th player since 1920, and the second player this season (Jason Heyward, ATL), to accomplish the feat. The University of California-Berkeley product leads A.L. rookies with 22 RBI and a .564 slugging percentage, and ranks second with a .318 batting average, four home runs, 11 doubles, two triples, 35 hits, 12 multi-hit games, 62 total bases and 17 extra-base hits

Other rookies receiving votes included Texas Rangers closer Neftali Feliz (0-0, 0.71 ERA, 9 SV, 12.2 IP, 12 SO); Boesch's Detroit teammate Austin Jackson (.297, 7 RBI, 8 2B); and right-handed reliever Sergio Santos (0-0, 0.90 ERA, 11 G, 10.0 IP, 12 SO) of the Chicago White Sox. Boesch will receive a specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, to commemorate his Rookie of the Month performance.
