Atlanta Braves outfielder Jason Heyward has been voted the May recipient of the Gillette presents National League Rookie of the Month Award. Heyward becomes the first rookie since Geovany Soto of the Cubs in 2008 (April, August) to win the award twice in a season, and the first since Milwaukee's Ryan Braun in 2007 (June, July) to win the award in consecutive months.

Heyward led all Major League rookies with three triples, 19 RBI, 19 runs scored and three stolen bases during the month of May. In addition, he tied for first with four home runs and 16 walks while pacing N.L. rookies with a .337 batting average. The 20-year-old also added seven doubles, a .628 slugging percentage and a .453 on-base percentage, which ranked second in the N.L. During the first three games of the month from May 1stth-4, Jason went 6-for-8 with a double, two home runs, five RBI and four runs scored. On May 19 th against Cincinnati, Heyward tied a career-best with three hits, including two doubles, a triple and two runs scored. His second double of the night came with two outs in the ninth inning of a 4-4 game, and drove home the winning run for Atlanta, giving Jason his second walk-off hit of the season. On May 21st at Pittsburgh, the Georgia native again recorded three hits with a double, home run and three RBI to lead the Braves to a 7-0 win over the Pirates. Heyward, who currently ranks fifth among N.L. outfielders in All-Star balloting, compiled 10 multi-hit contests along with five multi-RBI performances to lift the N.L. East-leading Braves to a 20-8 mark in May. The 14th overall selection of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft leads all Major League rookies with 10 homers, 38 RBI, a .567 slugging percentage, a .410 on-base percentage, 31 walks and 23 extra-base hits, and ranks third with a .287 batting average.

Others rookies receiving votes included St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Jaime Garcia (3-1, 1.53 ERA, 35.1 IP, 34 SO) and his teammate, third baseman David Freese (.315, 3 HR, 17 RBI, 17 R); right-hander Mike Leake (2-0, 1.88 ERA, 38.1 IP, 27 SO) of the Cincinnati Reds; and right-handed pitcher John Ely (3-1, 2.18 ERA, 33.0 IP, 28 SO) of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Heyward will receive a specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, to commemorate his Rookie of the Month performance.
