Tampa Bay's Matt Garza, Toronto's Jose Bautista share Bank of America Presents the American League Player of the Week honors
Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Matt Garza, who threw the first no-hitter in club history last week, and Toronto Blue Jays
outfielder Jose Bautista, who built up his Major League-leading total of 32 home runs, have been named co-winners of the
Bank of America Presents the American League Player of the Week for the period ending August 1st. Bank of
America, the Official Bank of Major League Baseball, is the presenting sponsor of the American League and National
League Player of the Week Awards, which reflect Bank of America's long-standing tradition of promoting and recognizing
higher standards of accomplishment.
On Monday, July 26th, Garza (2 GS, 1-0, 2.25 ERA, 16.0 IP, 5 H, 15 SO last week) threw the fifth no-hitter of the 2010 season
by shutting down the Detroit Tigers at Tropicana Field. The 2008 ALCS MVP faced the minimum 27 batters in his gem, which
came in Tampa Bay's 2,039th game since the franchise's inception in 1998. Eighty of Garza's 120 pitches went for strikes,
and he fanned six batters against a lone second inning walk, which was followed by a double play. On Saturday, the
California native, who is now 11-5 with a 4.11 ERA on the year, matched a season-high with nine strikeouts in a no-decision
against the New York Yankees, a duel between the top two clubs in the Majors. Bautista (.545, 5 HR, 13 RBI, 1.364 SLG last
week) continued his breakout season by starting last week with an 8-for-12 series vs. the Baltimore Orioles with six runs
scored, three home runs and eight RBI. The 2010 A.L. All-Star led all of MLB with 11 home runs in July, making him the first
Jay ever to lead the Majors in homers in at least two different months (he also had 12 in May) of a single calendar season.
Dating back to September 1, 2009, Bautista (.260, 32 HR, 80 RBI) leads the Majors with 41 homers, seven in front of the
next closest player (Prince Fielder's 34).
Other noteworthy performances were turned in by Minnesota Twins teammates Joe Mauer (.632, 12-19, 1 HR, 10 RBI),
Danny Valencia (.545, 1 HR, 8 RBI) and Delmon Young (.500, 1 HR, 7 RBI); Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz
(.320, 3 HR, 10 RBI), who slammed a pair of ninth inning, extra-base hits against the visiting Tigers on Friday and
Saturday; and Juan Pierre (.480, 5 RBI, 4 SB) of the Chicago White Sox. Pitchers who were nominated included Twins
southpaw Francisco Liriano (2-0, 0.00 ERA, 14.0 IP, 5 H, 17 SO); Pale Hose hurler Gavin Floyd (2-0, 0.64 ERA, 14.0 IP); Rays
veteran James Shields (2-0, 1.29 ERA, 14.0 IP, 18 SO); and Cleveland Indians closer Chris Perez (0.00 ERA, 3 saves).
