Buster Posey named winner of the 'Major League Baseball Clutch Performer of the Month Award presented by Pepsi' for July

Buster Posey of the San Francisco Giants was selected by fans in an online vote as the winner of the "Major League Baseball Clutch Performer of the Month Award Presented by Pepsi" for July, it was announced today. The award recognizes the player who performed his best when the game was on the line. Pepsi has been the "Official Soft Drink of Major League Baseball" since 1997.

The "MLB Clutch Performer of the Month Award Presented by Pepsi" winner is selected by the fans from a list of six nominees chosen by a special editorial panel from MLB.com, the official website of Major League Baseball. During the first week of each month, fans can visit a microsite, pepsiclutch.mlb.com, powered by MLB.com specifically created for the Clutch Performer platform to vote for the nominee they believe was the best Clutch Performer during the previous month.

Posey hit .417 (43-for-103) with six doubles, a triple, seven home runs and 24 RBI for the N.L. Wild Card-leading San Francisco Giants during the month of July.

Buster finished the month as the league leader in hits, ranked third in batting average, tied for third in RBI, was fourth in on-base percentage (.466) and fifth in slugging (.699). The rookie's month was highlighted by a 21-game hitting streak from July 4th-29th, which was the second-longest by a rookie in San Francisco-era history behind Hall of Famer Willie McCovey's 22-game hitting streak in 1959. During the 21-game stretch, he batted .440 (37-for-84). The versatile 23-year-old also surpassed Jim Ray Hart and set a new Giants rookie record for hits in a single month. On July 10th at Washington, the Leesburg, Georgia native singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning with the game tied at five and runners on first and second. Posey went 4-for-5 in the contest with a double, a home run, three RBI and two runs scored in a 10-5 win over the Nationals. In a one-run game on July 20th at Dodger Stadium, Posey collected an RBI single in the top of the ninth inning, extending the Giants lead and helping them to a 7-5 victory. With runners in scoring position, the Florida State University product hit .375 (9-for-24) with a triple, home run and 15 RBI in July. In addition to his achievements at the plate, Buster helped the veteran San Francisco pitching staff behind the dish as well, becoming the first rookie catcher in Major League history to catch back-to-back shutouts started by former Cy Young Award winners on July 15th (Tim Lincecum) and July 16th (Barry Zito). Posey, who was selected by the Giants with the fifth overall pick in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft, leads all N.L. rookies in batting average (.349) and on-base percentage (.391), ranks second in slugging percentage (.530), ranks sixth in RBI (37) and multi-hit games (21), tied for sixth in home runs (8), seventh in hits (75) and tied for seventh in runs (31).

At the conclusion of the season, fans will have the opportunity to vote on the "Major League Baseball Clutch Performer of the Year Award Presented by Pepsi" winner at MLB.com and the award will be presented during the Major League Baseball postseason. Last season, Andre Ethier was named the recipient of the "2009 MLB Clutch Performer of the Year Award Presented by Pepsi."
