The 23-year-old left-hander followed up with a 4-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field on August 25th, yielding just one run on three hits with one walk and five strikeouts over 7.0 innings. In the two starts combined (15.0 innings pitched), Brian allowed just four runners to reach second base. Matusz hurled at least 6.0 innings in five of his six August starts and issued no more than two walks in each of them. In addition, five of his six starts came against clubs with winning records: Tampa Bay, Texas, Boston and Chicago (twice). The University of San Diego product ranks first among all A.L. rookie pitchers this season with 27 starts, 150.2 innings pitched and 117 strikeouts. He also ranks second with a .269 opposing batting average and third with seven victories. Brian leads the American League in strikeout percentage against left-handed batters a 31% (Minnesota's Francisco Liriano ranks second at 29%). In eight career starts against the A.L. East rival Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees combined, Matusz is 3-3 with a 2.32 ERA (13 earned runs in 50.1 innings pitched).
