New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira has been named Bank of America Presents the American League Player of the Week for the period ending September 5th. Bank of America, the Official Bank of Major League Baseball, is the presenting sponsor of the American League and National League Player of the Week Awards, which reflect Bank of America's long-standing tradition of promoting and recognizing higher standards of accomplishment.

Teixeira reached base safely in each of his seven games played last week and guided the Yankees to six wins as the team maintained its lead atop the A.L. East standings. The 30-year-old switch-hitter led the A.L. with a .476 (10-for-21) batting average, eight RBI and a .633 on-base percentage, and tied for the league-lead with three doubles, 19 total bases and a .905 slugging percentage. Teixeira also ranked among the A.L. leaders in hits (T-2nd, 10), walks (3rd, seven) and home runs (T-4th, two). The two-time All-Star recorded a pair of three-hit games, going 3-for-3 with a home run and three runs scored on August 30th in an 11-5 win over Oakland at Yankee Stadium, and 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI on September 1st to help edge the A's 4-3. On August 31st against Oakland, Teixeira went 2-for-3 with his 30th home run of the year, marking the seventh straight season that the Annapolis, Maryland native has reached the 30-home run plateau. The three-time Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner is hitting .266 on the season with an A.L.-leading 101 runs scored. He also ranks fourth in the league with 80 walks and fifth in home runs (30) and RBI (99). This is the fifth career weekly award for Teixeira (previous: August 20-26, 2007). It marks the 10th consecutive season that at least two different Yankees have won the award, the longest such streak in the American League.

Other noteworthy performances included Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Felix Hernandez (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 17 SO) and Toronto Blue Jays second baseman Aaron Hill (.333, 3 HR, 7 RBI). Also considered were Seattle Mariners reliever David Aardsma (0-0, 0.00 ERA, 3 SV); Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim starter Ervin Santana (2-0, 2.63 ERA, 7 SO); and Teixeira's Yankees teammate Curtis Granderson (.308, 3 HR, 7 RBI).
