Kansas City Royals catcher Brayan Peña has been named Bank of America Presents the American League Player of the Week for the period ending September 12. Bank of America, the Official Bank of Major League Baseball, is the presenting sponsor of the American League and National League Player of the Week Awards, which reflect Bank of America's long-standing tradition of promoting and recognizing higher standards of accomplishment.

Peña recorded at least one hit in each of his six games played last week, and had multiple hits and RBI in four games. The 28-year-old switch-hitter ranked among the A.L. leaders in RBI (T-1st, nine), hits (T-3rd, 10), batting average (T-3rd, .435), total bases (T-7th, 16) and slugging percentage (10th, .696). In addition, Brayan threw out 40 percent (2-of-5) of runners attempting to steal a base. Peña entered the week hitting .218 on the season, and raised his average to .264 by week's end. The Havana, Cuba native, who has reached base safely in 11 consecutive contests, signed as a free agent with the Atlanta Braves in 2000 before being claimed off waivers by Kansas City in 2008. Since playing regularly on August 29th, Peña has reached base safely in 12 of 13 games played while batting .419 (18-for-43) with one home run, 12 RBI, six runs scored, five doubles and a .480 on-base percentage. In a 5-4 loss at Minnesota on September 6, Brayan went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Peña, who tied a career-best with three RBI on Sunday, batted .500 (6-for-12) with a double, home run, five RBI and two runs scored in a three-game set at Chicago from September 10th-12th. This is the first career weekly award for Peña, who becomes the first Royals player to earn the honor since first baseman Billy Butler for the same week last season (9/13/09).

Other noteworthy performances included Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Justin Verlander (2-0, 1.80 ERA, 18 SO) and Texas Rangers designated hitter Vladimir Guerrero (.500, 1 HR, 4 RBI). Also considered were Oakland Athletics outfielder Coco Crisp (.444, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 7 SB); Chicago White Sox designated hitter Paul Konerko (.421, 3 HR, 6 RBI); and Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Ben Zobrist (.389, 2 HR, 9 RBI).
