Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez has been voted the September recipient of the Gillette presents National League Rookie of the Month Award.

In 27 games during September, Alvarez hit .311 (32-for-103) with five home runs, and led all Major League rookies with 26 RBI. The 26 RBI ranked second in the N.L. for the month behind Colorado's Troy Tulowitzki (40). In addition, the 23-year-old collected 10 doubles, one triple and 15 runs scored while slugging .573. Pedro recorded at least one RBI in seven straight contests from September 21st - 27th, including five multi-RBI performances. On September 30th at Florida, Pedro went 4-for-5 with a home run and matched a career-high with five RBI. The Dominican-born slugger, who grew up in New York City, also compiled a career-best 11-game hitting streak from September 21st - October 1st. During the streak, the Vanderbilt product batted .467 (21-for-45) with five home runs and 21 RBI. Alvarez joined teammates Jose Tabata (14 games) and Neil Walker (18 games) to become the first trio of Pirates rookies to each have double-digit hitting streaks in the same season since 1952 when Dick Groat, Clem Koshorek and Jack Merson accomplished the feat. Alvarez, who finished the season with 16 home runs and 64 RBI, paired with Walker (12 HR, 66 RBI) to become the first pair of rookies in Pirates history to each have at least 10 home runs and 60 RBI in the same season. The second overall selection of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft set a Pirates rookie record for third basemen with his 16 home runs, which was also the most by a Pirates third baseman since Aramis Ramirez hit 17 in 2002. Since his promotion to the Majors on June 16th, Alvarez led all Major League rookies with 64 RBI and ranked third with 16 home runs (Posey - 17; Stanton - 22).

Others rookies receiving votes included Arizona's Daniel Hudson (3-0, 1.50 ERA, 36.0 IP, 28 SO) and Brandon Allen (.278, 1 HR, 5 RBI); Mike Stanton (.316, 8 HR, 19 RBI) of the Marlins; San Francisco's Madison Bumgarner (2-2, 1.13 ERA, 32.0 IP, 32 SO) and Buster Posey (.256, 7 HR, 14 RBI); Ike Davis (.344, 3 HR, 13 RBI) of the Mets; and Atlanta's Mike Dunn (1-0, 1.86 ERA, 12 G, 9.2 IP, 16 SO).

Alvarez will receive a specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, to commemorate his Rookie of the Month performance.
