PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Major League Baseball umpires will host the 6th Annual UMPS CARE Charities Golf Classic at Raven Golf Club at South Mountain on Thursday, Jan. 20. UMPS CARE Charities is a 501c3 non-profit organization established by Major League Baseball umpires.

Proceeds from the Golf Classic help to provide Major League Baseball experiences for children awaiting adoption, Build-A-Bear Workshop® experiences for children with cancer, college scholarships for deserving young adults who were adopted as children, and financial assistance for families in need.

The tournament format is a five-player scramble, with each foursome joined by a Major League Baseball umpire or a current/retired player. Sponsorships for teams of four and eight golfers are available at levels ranging from $1,250-$5,000. Golfers are welcome to register as individual participants as well at a $250 entry fee. Player entry includes golf, gift bag, and invite to the post-event reception. Tee sponsorships are available at $500 for those wishing to support the event but unable to attend.

"The Golf Classic is our signature fundraising event each year," said Gary Darling, MLB umpire and President of the Board for UMPS CARE Charities. "We have always had a great turnout from the Phoenix community and we hope for more of the same again this year."

A wide range of prizes, raffle items, and auction items are available for the skilled and the lucky. A pre-tournament, Wednesday evening social hour is also scheduled for Golf Classic participants and many of the 68 Major League Baseball umpires, with details to be finalized in the weeks leading up to the event.

Player registration, sponsorships, complete event details, and program descriptions are available online at www.UmpsCare.com. The 2010 event sold out weeks in advance so companies and individuals are encouraged to register early.
