NSSA was founded in Salisbury, North Carolina in 1959 as a way to honor the nation's sportscasters and sportswriters for their crafts. Each year, the NSSA's 700 members elect State and National Sportscasters of the Year. The Hall of Fame was added in 1962, with the induction of legendary sportswriter Grantland Rice.

Each spring, the Sportscasters and Sportswriter of the Year and the Hall of Famers are honored during NSSA's Awards Weekend, which culminates in the Awards Banquet and Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

NSSA members also vote for the Bear Bryant College Football Coach of the Year Award; select members vote for the Bobby Bowden College Football Coach of the Year Award.

NSSA serves as the U.S. arm for the International Sports Press Association (AIPS).

The NSSA Hall of Fame is operated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit by a local Foundation Board, with appointed members serving on an advisory National Board. Two dozen North Carolina sports luminaries serve on NSSA's Honorary Board.
