Atlanta Braves left fielder Martín Prado has been named the National League Player of the Week for the period ending May 15, 2011. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.

In six games last week, the Maracay, Venezuela native hit .462 (12-for-26) and was tied for first in the Major Leagues with 12 hits and 22 total bases. His three home runs and seven runs scored were both tied for second in the National League while his eight RBI were tied for third-best. Prado had the N.L.'s third-highest slugging percentage (.846) this week while notching a .517 onbase percentage. On Thursday, May 12th, Prado clubbed a game-tying grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning with the Braves trailing the visiting Washington Nationals 5-1. Prado's grand slam was the first bases-loaded homer hit from the leadoff spot in the Majors this season. In his next plate appearance, Prado drew a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the 10th inning, and he scored the game-winning run on Brian McCann's walk-off single to lead the Braves to the extra-inning victory over the Nationals, 6-5. On Saturday, May 14th, the 2010 N.L. All-Star hammered the second pitch that he saw from Philadelphia Phillies starter Joe Blanton to deep left field for his fifth-career (first of 2011) leadoff homer. Prado ended the day 2-for-4 with three RBI, en route to a 5-3 Braves victory at Turner Field. Martín had multiple hits in five of Atlanta's six games last week, and went 1-for-3 with a walk on Sunday. Prado is hitting .383 (23-for-60) in the month of May, and he is currently fifth in the Majors with 53 hits this season. This is his third career weekly award, having won previously for the period ending May 16, 2010 and July 5, 2009.
