Starting pitchers Daniel Hudson of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Shaun Marcum of the Milwaukee Brewers were named co-winners of the National League Player of the Week Award for the period ending May 22, 2011. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.

The right-hander struck out six batters and walked just two en route to the 6-1 victory. On Sunday, May 22nd, Hudson dazzled in his first career Interleague start, silencing Minnesota Twins hitters through his 8.0 innings of work. Hudson notched six strikeouts and did not walk a batter as the D-backs completed the three-game sweep of the Twins with a 3-2 win at Chase Field. The performance marked the ninth time in 10 starts that Hudson has tossed at least 6.0 innings. The win also extended the D-backs current winning streak to six games. This marks Hudson's first career weekly award.

Marcum also earned a 2-0 record in his two starts last week, compiling a 1.20 ERA with 12 strikeouts and just nine hits allowed over 15.0 innings of work. On May 16th, the right-hander gave up a single earned run in 7.0 innings of work to lead the Brew Crew to a 2-1 win over the Dodgers in Los Angeles. The 29-year-old took the ball again on Saturday, May 21st against the Colorado Rockies, fanning eight over 8.0 innings of work, and leading the Brewers to a 3-2 victory at Miller Park. Marcum, who was acquired by the Brewers via trade from Toronto during the offseason, improved his record to 6-1 this season, and he has now won a career-best six consecutive decisions. The Missouri State product's win total is currently tied for first in the Majors. This is the first career weekly award for Marcum. Other noteworthy performances last week included Marcum's Milwaukee teammate, closer John Axford (1.80 ERA, 4 SV, 9 SO, 5.0 IP); St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina (.565, 13 H, 4 RBI, .783 SLG, .615 OBP) and starting pitcher Jake Westbrook (2-0, 0.60 ERA, 15.0 IP); Cincinnati Reds outfielder Jay Bruce (.455, 3 HR, 4 RBI, 10 H, .955 SLG); Washington Nationals second baseman Danny Espinosa (.300, 2 HR, 7 RBI, .800 SLG); Rockies first baseman Jason Giambi (.417, 4 HR, 8 RBI, 1.417 SLG); Padres outfielder Ryan Ludwick (.455, 10 H, 2 HR, ,.727 SLG, .458 OBP); San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey (.393, 11 H, .469 OBP), second baseman Freddy Sanchez (.417, 10 H, 2 2B, 5 RBI, .464 OBP) and ace Tim Lincecum (1-1, 1.84, 9 SO, 14.2 IP).
