Jose Bautista Of The Toronto Blue Jays Named The Budweiser Presents American League Player Of The Month For May
Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista has been voted the Budweiser Presents American League Player of
the Month for May. Budweiser, the official beer sponsor of Major League Baseball and sponsor for 24 of 30 MLB clubs, is
also the presenting sponsor of the National League and American League Player of the Month Awards.
Bautista batted .360 (31-for-86) with four doubles, 11 home runs and 23 RBI in 23 games in May to win his second
consecutive A.L. Player of the Month honor and the fourth of his career. Despite missing five games due to neck spasms,
the right-handed slugger led the A.L. in home runs for the fifth straight month dating
back to July 2010. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the last player to lead a league
in home runs (outright or tied) for five consecutive months was Jimmie Foxx, when he
led the A.L. in homers from June 1933 to April 1934. Bautista currently leads the Majors
with 20 home runs on the season. In addition to his long ball exploits, the Dominican
Republic native paced the Majors in on-base percentage (.476) and slugging percentage
(.791). Among the monthly A.L. leaders, Bautista ranked third in RBI, fifth in batting
average and tied for fifth with 18 walks. The 30-year-old reached base safely in 21 out
of 23 games in May, and has reached safely in 92 of his last 105 games through May 31st dating back to last season.
Bautista is in the midst of an eight-game hitting streak heading into today, batting .448 (13-for-29) with one home run,
eight RBI and six runs scored during the stretch. He also enjoyed a season-high nine-game streak earlier in the month
from May 8th-18th. On May 15th, in the finale of a three-game set against Minnesota, the reigning A.L. Hank Aaron Award
winner launched a career-high three home runs as the Blue Jays routed the Twins, 11-3, at Target Field. He hit .500
(7-for-14) with one double, five home runs, seven RBI and five runs scored in the series sweep for the Jays. In an
interleague tilt with Houston on May 21st, the 2010 A.L. All-Star went 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI in leading
the Blue Jays to a 7-5 victory at the Rogers Centre. It was the eighth-year veteran's second multi-homer game of the
week and his third of the season. Prior to being named A.L. Player of the Month for April and May this season, Jose
previously garnered monthly honors for July 2010 (with Minnesota's Delmon Young) and August 2010.
Others receiving votes were Boston Red Sox first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, who hit .341 (42-for-123) for the month
with seven doubles, nine home runs and an A.L.-leading 31 RBI in 29 games; Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Matt Joyce, who
batted a Major League-leading .414 (36-for-87) with five doubles, two triples, seven home runs and 21 RBI in 26 games;
and New York Yankees center fielder Curtis Granderson, who batted .294 (35-for-119) with five doubles, three triples, 10
home runs, 26 RBI and a Major League-leading 29 runs scored in 29 games.
The Budweiser Presents American League Player of the Month, Jose Bautista, will receive a specially designed trophy,
suitably engraved, in recognition of his accomplishment.
