Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Jair Jurrjens has been voted the National League Pitcher of the Month for the month of May.

In six May starts, Jurrjens went 5-1 and was tied for the Major League-lead in wins. The Curaçao native's 43.2 innings pitched were the second-most in the National League, while his 1.65 ERA was the
second-lowest among N.L. starters. The 25-year-old gave up just six free passes on the month while striking out 24 batters. Jurrjens tossed 7.2 innings, permitting just two runs on May 2nd against Milwaukee to earn his first victory of the month as the Braves downed the Brewers, 6-2, at Turner Field. The young right-hander led the Braves to a 5-2 win against the N.L. East-leading Philadelphia Phillies on May 8th, allowing just a single earned run across 6.1 innings at Citizens Bank Park. Jurrjens faced the Phillies again on May 14th, dealing a three-hit, 7.1-inning performance as the Braves won 5-3 at Turner Field in Atlanta. Making his 100th career start on May 24th at Pittsburgh, Jair tossed 7.2 shutout innings to earn the victory as the Braves downed the Bucs 2-0. Jurrjens made his ninth start of the season on May 29th vs. Cincinnati and claimed his seventh win, going 8.0 innings while allowing just one earned run as the Braves edged the visiting Reds 2-1. With the victory, Jurrjens became just the just the fourth pitcher in Major League history to have started a season with nine consecutive games of 6.0 innings pitched-or-more while allowing two-orfewer earned runs in each outing, joining Lefty Gomez (1937), Randy Johnson (2000) and Ubaldo Jimenez, who notched 12 in 2010. This is his second career monthly award after being voted N.L. Pitcher of the Month for September 2009.

Other pitchers receiving votes were Clayton Kershaw (4-0, 1.77 ERA, CG, SHO, 40.2 IP, 46 SO) of the Los Angeles Dodgers; Florida Marlins starter Anibal Sanchez (4-0, 1.66 ERA, 43.1, 44 SO); Arizona Diamondbacks reliever J.J. Putz (11 SV, 0.00 ERA, 13.0 IP, 10 SO); Milwaukee Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo (5-1, 2.25 ERA, 41 SO, 40.0 IP); Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Charlie Morton (3-1, 2.06 ERA, 35.0 IP, 19 SO); and San Francisco Giants ace Tim Lincecum (3-1, 1.47 ERA, CG, SHO, 36.2 IP, 34 SO). Jair Jurrjens will receive specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, to commemorate his Pitcher of the Month performance.
