Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Jeremy Hellickson has been voted the May recipient of the Gillette presents American League Rookie of the Month Award.

Hellickson, who was also named the A.L. Pitcher of the Month for May, went 4-1 with a 1.36 ERA over five starts during the month. The 24-year-old right-hander led all Major League rookies and tied for fourth overall in the Majors for victories during the month. Hellickson's 1.36 ERA, which ranked second among starters in the Majors behind Boston's Josh Beckett (1.00), is the second-lowest May ERA in Tampa Bay Rays club history behind Scott Kazmir (1.22 in 2008) and the third-lowest ERA of any month in club history. In 33.0 innings, Jeremy permitted six runs (five earned) on 19 hits with 15 walks and 23 strikeouts while holding opposing batters to a .168 mark. The Des Moines, Iowa native opened the month with 14.0 scoreless innings across two starts against the Baltimore Orioles. In his first start on May 7th at Camden Yards, Jeremy hurled 5.0 shutout innings, allowing just three hits to earn the victory in Tampa Bay's 8-2 win. On May 13th against the Orioles at Tropicana Field, Hellickson pitched a complete-game shutout, holding Baltimore to four hits with a walk in the 120-pitch effort. The performance marked the first complete game and shutout of Hellickson's career, and he is the only A.L. rookie to toss a complete game this season. On May 18th at Toronto, Jeremy allowed three earned runs with six strikeouts over 5.2 innings to pick up the victory in the 6-5 Tampa Bay win. The victory marked the fourth consecutive win for Hellickson, matching a career-best, which was also accomplished from August 2 - September 22, 2010. Hellickson, who was selected by the Rays in the fourth round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, closed out the month of May with 7.0 scoreless innings on May 29th at home against the A.L. Central-leading Cleveland Indians.

Other rookies receiving votes included Kansas City Royals teammates Eric Hosmer (.283, 5 HR, 17 RBI, 6 2B, 12 R, .515 SLG) and left-hander Tim Collins (1-1, 0.64 ERA, 14.0 IP, 4 H, 9 BB, 12 SO); Seattle's Michael Pineda (2-1, 2.81 ERA, 5 GS, 32.0 IP, 22 H, 7 BB, 36 SO), who won the Gillette Presents American League Rookie of the Month Award for April; and first baseman Mark Trumbo (.272, 6 HR, 15 RBI, 4 2B, 10 R, .511 SLG) of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Hellickson will receive a specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, to commemorate his Rookie of the Month performance.
