J.J. Putz of the Arizona Diamondbacks has been selected as the winner of the Major League Baseball Delivery Man of the Month Award for May, it was announced today. This Major League Baseball award recognizes the most outstanding relief pitcher during each month of the regular season as voted on by a panel from Major League Baseball.

Putz, who converted each of his 11 save opportunities during the month, tossed 13.0 innings and allowed just one unearned run on five hits with four walks and 10 strikeouts to help the D-backs to a 19-10 record for the month of May.  The 34-year-old right-hander tied Florida's Leo Nuñez for the Major League-lead in saves, and on May 29th at Houston, he collected his 16th consecutive save to start the season, extending his franchise record.  At the time, the streak was the longest active and second-longest in the Majors this season behind Nuñez, who converted 18 straight from April 6th - May 24th.  Putz, a 2007 A.L. All-Star, held opposing hitters to a .114 mark during the month, and he did not allow a baserunner in seven of his 13 outings.  Putz, a sixth round selection of the Seattle Mariners in the 1999 First-Year Player Draft, did not allow a hit over his final six appearances of the month.  Entering Thursday, the University of Michigan product is tied with Atlanta's Craig Kimbrel for second in the Majors with 16 saves, trailing only Nuñez (19).  This marks the second Delivery Man of the Month Award for Putz, who also received the award in June 2007 while pitching for the Mariners.

Other relievers receiving votes included Ryan Madson (0-1, 2.57 ERA, 10 SV, 14.0 IP, 5 BB, 14 SO) of the Philadelphia Phillies; Fernando Salas (2-0, 1.88 ERA, 8 SV, 14.1 IP, 3 BB, 15 SO) of the St. Louis Cardinals; New York Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez (0-1, 1.65 ERA, 9 SV, 16.1 IP, 7 BB, 12 SO); and David Robertson (0-0, 0.75 ERA, 12.0 IP, 11 BB, 23 SO) of the New York Yankees.
