Starting pitcher Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers, who was elected to his fourth All-Star Game earlier this week, has been
voted American League Pitcher of the Month for June.
Verlander compiled a perfect 6-0 record with a 0.92 ERA, 54 strikeouts, six walks, two complete games and one shutout in 49.0
innings pitched over six starts in winning his second career A.L. Pitcher of the Month Award (previously accomplished in May 2009).
The Tigers ace topped the Majors in wins, innings pitched and strikeouts, and paced the A.L. in ERA and finished second in the league
with a .172 opponent batting average.
In Detroit on June 9th, Verlander allowed one run on five hits in eight innings en route to a 4-1 win over the Seattle Mariners.
The Virginia native walked one and fanned 10 in the 126-pitch outing, his first of three double-digit strikeout performances of the
month. In his next appearance on June 14th, the Old Dominion product held the Cleveland Indians hitless into the eighth inning before
Orlando Cabrera broke up the bid with a one-out single to center. Despite just missing on his second no-hitter of the season, the
28-year-old finished with a two-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts as the Tigers rolled the Indians, 4-0, at Comerica Park. Verlander
continued his dominance into his first-ever start at Coors Field on June 19th, scattering four hits and striking out five as the Tigers
routed the Rockies, 9-1. It was his career-high tying fourth complete game of the season and the first by a visiting hurler in Denver
this year. On June 25th, the second overall pick in the 2004 First-Year Player Draft kept the Arizona Diamondbacks off balance,
allowing just four hits in eight innings on his way to a season-high 14 strikeouts in a 6-0 victory in Detroit. Verlander has won seven
straight starts dating back to May 29th and hasn't taken a loss since April 27th. In 11 starts since May 7th, Verlander is 9-0 with a 1.54
ERA, 79 strikeouts and 12 walks, and has gone at least eight innings in eight of those outings. The right-hander previously captured
A.L. Co-Player of the Week for the periods ending May 9th (with Francisco Liriano) and June 20th (with James Shields).
Other pitchers receiving votes included New York Yankees ace CC Sabathia (5-1, 3.20 ERA, 45.0 IP, 39 K) and rookie Ivan Nova
(3-1, 3.58 ERA, 21 K); Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim right-hander Jered Weaver (3-0, 1.67 ERA, 49.0 IP, 54 K, 6 BB); and Cleveland
Indians right-hander Carlos Carrasco (4-2, 1.90 ERA, 42.2 IP, 28K).
The American League Pitcher of the Month, Justin Verlander, will receive a specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, for his
accomplishment.
