Carlos Gonzalez of the Colorado Rockies named National League Player of the Week
Colorado Rockies right fielder Carlos Gonzalez has been named National League Player of the Week for the period of
August 22-28, 2011. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.
In six games last week, Gonzalez led baseball with 10 RBI and was tied for first in the Majors with 13 hits and nine runs
scored while hitting .481 (13-for-27). The lefty slugger ranked second in total bases (24), tied for second in home runs (3) and
notched the league's third-highest batting average, fourth-best slugging percentage (.889) and fifth-best on-base percentage (.533)
while swiping a pair of bases. Gonzalez hit safely in all six outings, extending his current hitting streak to 15 games (since 8/12).
On August 22nd, he went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI as the Rockies defeated the visiting Astros 9-5 in the first game of a
three-game set at Coors Field. The 25-year-old repeated that performance on August 24th, homering and driving in three as the Rox
completed a three-game sweep of the Astros with a 7-6 extra-inning victory. Gonzalez collected at least one RBI in five of six
games last week and extended his RBI streak to 11 games before seeing it snapped on Sunday. The 11-game streak, in which
"CarGo" collected 21 RBI, surpassed Vinny Castilla's 10-game mark (set in April, 2004) to set a new franchise record. Gonzalez had
four multi-hit performances during the week, and matched a season and career high with four hits - including a pair of bunt singles
- in Saturday's 7-6 extra-inning loss at Dodger Stadium. The native of Maracaibo, Zulia, Venezuela followed Saturday's
performance with a 3-for-4 effort in Sunday's matchup, helping the Rockies to a 7-6 victory and avoiding a three-game sweep at the
hands of the hometown Dodgers. Gonzalez's 35 RBI since the All-Star break rank second among National Leaguers (behind only
teammate Troy Tulowitzki's 37), and his 86 RBI this season are tied for sixth in the N.L. This is his third career weekly award,
having won twice previously last season, including for the comparable week of 2010 (July 26-August 1 and August 23-29, 2010).
Other noteworthy performances last week included Tulowitzki (.409, 3 HR, 8 RBI, 6 R, .864 SLG, .536 OBP); Milwaukee's
Ryan Braun (.400, HR, 7 RBI, 10 H, .760 SLG, .500 OBP) and Corey Hart (.500, 3 HR, 5 RBI, 13 H, 9 R, .962 SLG, .552 OBP, 2 SB);
Matt Kemp (.296, 3 HR, 8 RBI, 8 H, .667 SLG) and James Loney (.444, 12 H, 6 R, .778 SLG, .483 OBP) of the Dodgers; Houston's
Carlos Lee (.462, 12 H, HR, .769 SLG); Aramis Ramirez (.464, 13 H, .516 OBP) of the Chicago Cubs; Cincinnati's Joey Votto (.400, 4
HR, 6 RBI, 6 R, 1.000 SLG, .520 OBP); Chris Capuano (1-0, 0.00 ERA, CG SHO, 13 SO, 9.0 IP) of the New York Mets; and Arizona's
Ian Kennedy (2-0, 0.64 ERA, 15 SO, 14.0 IP).
