New York Mets left fielder Jason Bay has been named National League Player of the Week for the period of September 5-11, 2011. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.

In eight games last week, Bay was tied for the Major League-lead in hits (13), total bases (24) and doubles (5) while ranking second in the Majors and first in the National League with 10 RBI. The 32-year-old veteran had the N.L.'s secondhighest slugging percentage (.889) last week while ranking fourth in hitting with a .481 (13-for-27) batting average and tying for sixth in the league with a .500 on-base percentage. On Thursday, September 8th, the British Columbia, Canada native crushed his second grand slam of the season (fourth of his career) in the first game of a doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves at Citi Field. Bay, who hit two homers during the week, combined to go 3-for-6 with five RBI during the doubleheader in becoming the second consecutive Mets player to win the award after David Wright took home the honor last week. The three-time All-Star helped lead the Mets to a 5-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs in Flushing on Friday, going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles. His RBI two-bagger helped extend a fourth-inning rally in which the Mets tied the game at three. In Sunday's matchup between the two clubs, Bay continued to swing a hot bat, again going 2-for-4 while driving in two. With hits in 10 consecutive games since September 3rd, Bay has eclipsed his previous season-best of nine. His 56 RBI this season are tops among current Mets this season. This is his fifth career National League Player of the Week award, all of which came while with the Pittsburgh Pirates (week ending August 14, 2005; May 21, 2006; May 28, 2006; and May 27, 2007).

Other noteworthy performances last week included Atlanta's Michael Bourn (.314, 11 H, 3 SB, 6 R), Freddie Freeman (.314, 11 H, .552 SLG, 7 RBI) and Chipper Jones (.370, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 10 H, .704 SLG); San Diego's Nick Hundley (.348, 3 HR, 8 H, 5 R, .783 SLG); Philadelphia's Hunter Pence (.393, HR, 7 RBI, 11 H, .679 SLG, .452 OBP) and Cliff Lee (1-0, 0.56 ERA, 16.0 IP, 13 SO); Arizona's Justin Upton (.385, 4 HR, 5 RBI, 10 H, 8 R, .885 SLG, .448 OBP) and Daniel Hudson (1-0, CG, 1.00 ERA, 9.0 IP, 7 SO); San Francisco's Madison Bumgarner (2-0, 2.03 ERA, 13.1 IP, 21 SO); Chris Carpenter (1-0, CG, SHO, 0.00 ERA, 9.0 IP, 5 SO) of the St. Louis Cardinals; Florida's Anibal Sanchez (1-0, 0.00 ERA, CG, SHO, 9.0 IP, 11 SO) and Javier Vazquez (2-0, 0.69 ERA, 13.0 IP, 14 SO); and Carlos Marmol (0.00 ERA, 4 SV, 4.0 IP, 7 SO) of the Chicago Cubs.

In recognition of his National League Player of the Week Award, Jason Bay will be awarded a watch courtesy of Game Time, the leader in licensed sports watches, available at MLB.com.
