Starting pitcher Doug Fister of the Detroit Tigers has been voted American League Pitcher of the Month for September.
Fister compiled a perfect 5-0 record with a league-leading 0.53 ERA, 34 strikeouts and three walks in 34.0 innings over five
appearances (four starts) en route to winning his first career A.L. Pitcher of the Month Award. Among Major League leaders with at
least 23.0 innings pitched, the California native finished first in ERA and opponents batting average (.127) and was tied for first with
Florida's Javier Vazquez in wins. On September 5th against the Cleveland Indians, Fister allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits
with a career-best 13 strikeouts in 8.0 innings as the Tigers defeated the Tribe, 4-2, at Progressive Field. After establishing a new
career strikeout mark by fanning his 10th batter to end the seventh inning, the right-hander struck out the side in his eighth and final
inning of work to finish with 13 on the night. In his next start on September 11th, the seventh round pick in the 2006 First-Year Player
Draft (by the Seattle Mariners) kept the Minnesota Twins in check, holding them scoreless for 7.0 innings while striking out five and
walking two in a 2-1 Detroit victory. The win was Detroit's ninth straight, completing a sweep of the Twins. Fister's mastery on the
mound continued in Oakland on September 16th as the 27-year-old allowed just one run on three hits with five strikeouts to lead
Detroit to an A.L. Central-clinching 3-1 triumph over the Athletics. In a rare relief appearance against Kansas City on September 21st,
Fister allowed one run on two hits with two strikeouts in 3.0 innings to help the Tigers defeat the Royals 6-3. Fister's only other career
relief appearance came in his Major League debut against the Tampa Bay Rays on August 8, 2009. In his final start of the season on
September 26th, Fister shut down the Indians over 8.0 innings, striking out nine without issuing a free pass in a 14-0 Tigers rout at
Comerica Park. Prior to being traded by the Mariners to the Tigers on July 30th, Fister compiled a 3-12 mark with a 3.33 ERA in 146.0
innings over 21 starts. Since his August 3rd debut with Detroit, Fister has gone 8-1 with a 1.79 ERA, 57 strikeouts, five walks and a
.206 opponent batting average in 11 appearances (10 starts). The Tigers went 9-2 in those outings. Additionally, his 1.79 ERA was
the fourth-best in the Majors during that time frame.
New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera also garnered votes for the month of September. The 17-year veteran took sole
possession of the all-time saves lead when he notched the 602nd save of his career against Minnesota on Monday, September 19th.
Rivera finished the year with 44 saves, the eighth time the right-hander has recorded at least 40 saves in a season.
The American League Pitcher of the Month, Doug Fister, will receive a specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, for his
accomplishment.
