Season series: Cardinals vs. Padres

San Diego received several terrific starts from its deep rotation against St. Louis, including masterpieces from Clay Hensley and Chris Young, to win the season series over the Cards, 4-2. Chris Carpenter and Jeff Suppan -- the top two Redbirds starters -- struggled against San Diego.

May 26: Padres 7, Cardinals 1

Hensley (eight innings) shut down the Cardinals offense. Suppan, hit by a sickness that wracked most of the team, permitted seven runs in six innings.

May 27: Cardinals 4, Padres 3

In a wild finish, Yadier Molina picked Brian Giles off first base with two on and two outs in the ninth, giving Jason Isringhausen his 16th save in 18 chances.

May 28: Padres 10, Cardinals 8

The Redbirds took a 6-2 lead into the bottom of the fifth off Jake Peavy, but the Padres responded with eight runs off Mark Mulder and Brad Thompson.

Sept. 25: Padres 6, Cardinals 5
Busch Stadium

San Diego roughed up Suppan for five early runs and scored one off Brad Thompson in the seventh. Jim Edmonds hit a three-run homer in his return from post-concussion syndrome.

Sept. 26: Padres 7, Cardinals 5
Busch Stadium

Trailing Carpenter and the Cardinals, 5-2, the Padres scored four in the seventh off the Redbirds ace, cutting the Cardinals' NL Central lead to 1 1/2 games.

Sept. 27: Cardinals 4, Padres 2

Facing their eighth straight defeat, the Cardinals turned to Albert Pujols in the bottom of the eighth. El Hombre delivered a three-run homer off Cla Meredith, turning a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 victory.
