Winfield, Smith to attend Draft
Will represent Padres during first day of selections

Hall of Famer Dave Winfield and former general manager Randy Smith will be on hand in Orlando, Fla., during the Draft, to be held July 7-8.
Before Winfield became a Padre in 1973, he was sought after by three other professional sports teams. He is the only player to have ever been drafted in three sports.
The NBA's Atlanta Hawks, ABA's Utah Stars and the NFL's Minnesota Vikings drafted him along with the San Diego Padres.
He had his pick but Winfield -- inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2001 -- chose Major League Baseball. Winfield was the fourth overall pick in 1973.
Winfield started his career as a player for the Friars and is now a vice president and senior advisor for them. He played in the Majors for 22 seasons, won seven Gold Gloves and was selected to be an All-Star 12 times.
Another distinguished man in the Padres ranks is Smith, who was the vice president of baseball operations and general manager for the Padres from 1993-95.
The former GM -- who was then the youngest ever in MLB history to hold the position at 29 -- works as the director of professional and international scouting for the Padres.
