Great ride at Vandy comes to an end

Projected top pick shifts tries to shift focus from Regionals loss

David Price was the Friday-night starter for Vanderbilt University. The left-handed junior went 11-1 with a 2.63 ERA and allowed 95 hits and 31 walks while striking out 194 in 133 1/3 innings. Opponents hit just .199 against him.

Price, who has also pitched for Team USA on a couple of occasions, is generally considered to be the top prospect in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, and most believe he will go No. 1 overall to the Devil Rays on Thursday. He's agreed to write a journal for MLB.com chronicling his experiences leading up to the Draft.

Our season came to a sudden and unexpected end on Monday night. It was probably the hardest night of my life. It's the worst thing I've ever experienced. I'm more shocked than anything else that we lost.

I came into the game in relief and gave up a home run to a pinch-hitter that was the game-winner. I told my coach I could go, and I wanted to, even though I had just started a couple of days earlier. I wanted the ball as did every pitcher on our team. Our pitchers showed a lot of guts on Monday night.

I hit my spot; it just wasn't the right pitch. That was the hitter's first at-bat in the entire Regional. He came in, hit the fastball and hit it hard.

To be honest, I still haven't even thought about the Draft yet. I haven't sat down with my parents or my coaches to talk about it yet. I'm still kind of in shock from Monday night. We did not think we should lose. We lost two games in a row one time this year, and that was early. We didn't think we should lose, especially in a weekend series, and that's what we looked at this as, a weekend series against Michigan. We lost just one weekend series all year, to Arkansas. I guess once this wears off, I'll really be able to think about the Draft.

I can look back at my time at Vanderbilt really proudly. This has been the best choice of my life, that I came to college. I would suggest it to anyone, not just in baseball. I matured so much, not just on the field and off the field. Playing in this program with coach Tim Corbin has been nothing short of amazing.

I want to thank everyone for reading this journal over the past few weeks and for all of the support I've gotten. It's been a great ride at Vanderbilt and hopefully it's gotten me ready for the next step.
