Durbin to be activated Friday
Right-hander will start first game of doubleheader
By Ken Mandel / MLB.com
PHILADELPHIA -- J.D. Durbin's early-season waiver odyssey has finally brought him to Philadelphia. The right-hander will have his contract purchased by the team on Friday and will start start the first game of that day's double-header vs. the Mets. Manager Charlie Manuel said after Sunday's game that he planned to start Cole Hamels in the night game. The Phillies still need a starter for Saturday's game, and J.A. Happ appears to be the leading candidate. The prospect started for Triple-A Ottawa on Sunday. Durbin, 25, is 2-4 with a 4.55 ERA in 10 starts this season for Ottawa. In 133 career Minor League games (127 starts), Durbin went 49-27 with a 3.28 ERA. He is still seeking success at the Major league level, having appeared in five games, going 0-1 with a 14.63 ERA with the Twins (2004) and Diamondbacks (2007). Originally a second-round pick in the 2000 First-Year Player Draft, Durbin received an extensive education in the waiver process in March and April, when he became a member of four teams in a 17-day stretch. The Phillies, Durbin's fourth team, claimed Durbin from the Red Sox on April 13, after Boston designated him for assignment. He spent Spring Training with the Twins, but was claimed off waivers by the Diamondbacks on March 29. He appeared in one game for Arizona, and allowed seven earned runs in two-thirds of an inning, compiling a 94.50 ERA. The Red Sox claimed him on April 11, but had to designate him to make room for reliever Mike Timlin. Durbin is part of a long list of relievers picked up by the Phillies since Opening Day, joining Francisco Rosario, Rick Bauer, Jose Mesa and J.C. Romero. With Jon Lieber and Freddy Garcia possibly out for the season, Durbin has an opportunity to stick, to be determined by his effectiveness.
