The Marlins slugger on Monday received a phone call from the league office regarding the State Farm Home Run Derby. However, Cabrera missed the call, and his return phone call went unanswered.
"If they ask me, I'll do it," Cabrera said.
On Sunday, Cabrera was selected to his fourth straight All-Star Game. The lone Marlins representative competed in the Home Run Derby at Pittsburgh in 2006. He finished third in the competition, won by Philadelphia's Ryan Howard.
The Home Run Derby will take place on July 9 at AT&T Park in San Francisco, one day before the All-Star Game.
The Marlins opened a four-game series at San Diego on Monday. Entering the game, Cabrera had 17 home runs and 57 RBIs to go along with a .329 batting average.
The 24-year-old Cabrera was promoted to the big leagues in June 2003, and he has 121 MLB home runs, which is fourth all-time in Marlins history. Cabrera is one behind Gary Sheffield (122) for third place in team history.
