Forecasting 2008 milestones

The 2007 season witnessed an unprecedented string of Major League milestones achieved, and 2008 has the potential to be just as historic.

Among the milestones in reach for '08:

Barry Bonds is in line for another memorable year as he closes in on 3,000 hits (needs 65), 2,000 RBIs (needs four).

He also needs 16 runs scored to pass Ty Cobb for second all-time, and 66 to reach 2,296 runs and take over first place from Rickey Henderson. With 81 RBIs, Bonds will pass Cap Anson for third all-time with 2,077 RBIs.

Ken Griffey Jr. needs seven long balls to become the sixth player to hit 600 homers.

Manny Ramirez (10 homers away) and Gary Sheffield (20) are both in line to hit 500 homers.

John Smoltz needs to fan 15 hitters to become the 16th player with 3,000 strikeouts.

Randy Johnson would follow fellow southpaw Tom Glavine into the 300 wins club with 16 additional victories.
