Laster blasts Honu past CaneFires

Tigers prospect breaks out of slump with three-run homer

Tigers prospect Jeramy Laster slugged a three-run homer Saturday, powering the North Shore Honu to a 10-2 rout of the West Oahu CaneFires.

Laster snapped out of a 1-for-12 slump in the sixth inning with his sixth home run of the Hawaii Winter Baseball season. Masahiro Nagata, who went 3-for-5, opened the inning with a base hit and Astros farmhand Lou Santangelo walked to set the stage for Laster, who connected off Hawaii native Reid Santos (Indians).

Dusty Ryan, another Tigers prospect, ended an 0-for-9 drought in the fourth with a leadoff homer, his first since Sept. 1 with Class A Advanced Lakeland. Brewers farmhand Mat Gamel gave the Honu (25-12) a lead in the third with a two-run single off West Oahu starter Fumikazu Kimura.

Santangelo and Brad Corley (Pirates) delivered RBI doubles, Dan Worth (Tigers) slapped a run-scoring single in the seventh and Billy Hart (Astros) collected two hits and a run scored for North Shore.

Honu starter Sean Walker (2-0) allowed two runs -- one earned -- on three hits over 4 1/3 innings. The Astros Minor Leaguer walked two, struck out two and has allowed just one earned run over 10 1/3 innings in his last three appearances.

North Shore, which will play Honolulu or Waikiki in Monday's championship game, has won three of its last four games and is 12-2 against West Oahu.

Kimura (1-3) suffered the loss after surrendering three runs on four hits and three walks in four innings. The Japanese right-hander fanned two in his fourth HWB start.

The CaneFires (13-23) got on the board in the fifth. Jamie Hoffmann (Dodgers) walked and came home on an error by third baseman Michael Griffin (Reds) and Dodgers prospect Russell Mitchell followed with an RBI double.
