Two Sox pitchers lost in Rule 5 Draft

Lefty Capellan taken by Giants; Phillies pick righty Holdzkom

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Breaking from recent tradition, the Red Sox didn't make any selections in Thursday's Rule 5 Draft.

However, Boston did lose a couple of players. With the fourth pick, the Giants took left-handed starter Jose Capellan. With the 18th and final pick, the Phillies grabbed right-handed reliever Lincoln Holdzkom.

If those players don't stay on their respective teams' 25-man roster for the entire 2008 season, they will be offered back to the Red Sox for $25,000, half the acquisition cost.

Capellan, 21, pitched at Class A Lowell in 2007, going 4-3 with a 3.69 ERA in 14 starts. The Red Sox signed the Dominican Republic native as a free agent on July 16, 2003.

Holdzkom split 2007 between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket. At Portland, he pitched in 30 games, going 4-1 with a 3.47 ERA. In a smaller sample size, Holdzkom pitched even better at Pawtucket, going 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA in 12 appearances.
