Draft Report: Head of the class
Alvarez, Matusz should be among first names called June 5
By Jonathan Mayo / MLB.com
We know what you've been thinking.
All these weeks, all these reports. Good stuff, sure, but something was missing. The Draft Report went over the century mark but without filing on two of the top prospects in the entire class.
The wait is now over. In this week's Report, you can read all about Vandy third baseman Pedro Alvarez and lefty San Diego ace Brian Matusz. Joining that dynamic duo are five other collegians sure to go off the board fairly early on June 5.
Next week is the final week for TDR, so we'll be sure to load up with a grand finale of prospecting for you. For now, enjoy the septet below.
Pedro Alvarez, 3B
That's right, another top prospect from Vandy. Despite missing over a month after breaking a hamate bone, Alvarez is still expected to go early in the first round. Even though he went hitless in a recent game against Tennessee Tech, scouts are still impressed with his overall offensive package. Complete Report

Andrew Cashner, RHP
Texas Christian University
Few have risen as far and as fast as Cashner, TCU's closer. With a big jump in velocity, he's been virtually unhittable. Recently against Utah, he went 1 1/3 innings without allowing a hit while walking one and striking out three. He's got a .104 batting average against for the year along with 65 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings. Complete Report

Allan Dykstra, 1B
Wake Forest University
It's a great year for first basemen and Dykstra is part of that depth. He's a touch behind the Justin Smoaks and Yonder Alonsos of the world, but his left-handed power, which was on display in a recent game at Virginia when he went 2-for-6 with a homer and four RBIs, will certainly attract some. Conor Gillaspie, 3B
Wichita State University
He's been one of the most consistent hitters in the college class and currently has a .404 average and .491 OBP. In a recent game against Southern Illinois, the third baseman had a pair of hits and even stole two bases in a 10-0 win. Complete Report

Shooter Hunt, RHP
In a recent start against Southern Miss, Tulane's ace went seven innings, allowing two runs on two hits, walking one and striking out a dozen. For the year, he's now 7-1 with a 1.97 ERA, .144 batting average against and 105 strikeouts (42 walks) in 77 2/3 innings pitched. Complete Report

Brian Matusz, LHP
University of San Diego
Still the top pitcher on most Draft boards, the southpaw shook off a shaky start to the season to cement his position as a top lefty with good stuff. In a recent start against Loyola Marymount, Matusz went seven innings, allowing three unearned runs on six hits while striking out nine without allowing a walk. Complete Report

Cody Satterwhite, RHP
University of Mississippi
He began the year as the Ole Miss Saturday starter, but got bumped to Sundays in early April. His performances -- including a loss recently against South Carolina after yielding four runs on eight hits and five walks over six innings -- have been up and down, but scouts are still intrigued by his size and live arm.
