Guzman not focusing on free agency
Talks on hold til end of season; shortstop hopes to stay
By Bill Ladson / MLB.com
The stellar season comes at a good time for him, with free agency looming. However, neither the Nationals nor Guzman's agent, Stanley King, are talking about a contract extension, and it appears that will not happen until after the season is over.
"I want Cristian to focus on baseball -- I don't want him to have any distractions," King said by phone on Thursday afternoon. "Cristian really likes the team and wants to stay in Washington."
King declined to say what kind of contract Guzman is looking for after the season, but a baseball source familiar with both sides said Guzman is willing to be fair with the Nationals considering that Guzman has been hurt most of his time with the club. Guzman has suffered serious right shoulder and left thumb injuries during his three-plus years in Washington. The Guzman camp would be willing to take a two-year deal at a fair price with Washington.
Guzman is in the final year of a four-year $16 million contract.
