Looking at the calendar, that two-week plan would expire right around the All-Star break, meaning it is probably a long shot that Ortiz will be able to start at designated hitter for the American League on July 15.
However, knowing that Ortiz has a huge lead in the fan voting, Francona said it was premature to say whether the left-handed slugger will suit up in the showcase event.
Ortiz will be in New York for the festivities, at least for Monday's State Farm Home Run Derby, in which he's already agreed to participate in a promotion.
"Our concern is him being healthy," Francona said. "I need to talk to him, too. You're talking about a guy that's leading the world in votes. But our concern is his health. That's why I want to talk to him."
The fact that the Minor Leagues also take an All-Star break at the same time could make for challenging logistics if Ortiz is ready to start a rehab assignment at that time.
"There's other things to think about -- finding games, if that's where he's at [in his rehab]," Francona said. "There's a lot of things to think about in that time period that we need to figure out."
