Miller shows signs of encouragement

Reliever throws 20 fastballs in bullpen session on Saturday

LOS ANGELES -- Some added relief could be on the way shortly after the All-Star break.

Justin Miller, on the disabled list since July 5 with right elbow inflammation, threw his first bullpen session on Saturday since experiencing discomfort on July 4.

"It's a positive," Miller said. "I'm excited. I've been bored."

Miller is eligible to return from the DL on July 20, at home against the Phillies. He began throwing off flat ground on Thursday, and on Saturday at Dodger Stadium, he threw 20 fastballs off the mound.

His next bullpen session will be in Jupiter, Fla., on Tuesday, when he will increase the total to around 25-30 pitches.

Miller is encouraged that his ailment isn't serious because it was more in the back of the arm, behind the elbow.

The right-hander has appeared in 39 games and he's thrown 39 1/3 innings this season.
