Wainwright dominant in rehab start
Right-hander's next outing may come with Cardinals
By Matthew Leach / MLB.com
Wainwright pitched brilliantly in his third Minor League rehabilitation start on Saturday night, turning in 4 2/3 dominating shutout innings for Double-A Springfield. He allowed three hits, struck out seven and didn't walk a batter. Wainwright threw 64 pitches, including 43 for strikes.
In terms of results, it was exactly what the Cards were hoping to see from Wainwright. It might even have been enough to get him back on the Major League roster.
Wainwright, who is recovering from an injured pulley tendon in his right middle finger, made two starts for Triple-A Memphis before taking the mound for Springfield. St. Louis pitching coach Dave Duncan said on Friday that if Wainwright turned in an exceptional performance for Springfield, his next appearance might be for the Cardinals.
St. Louis has yet to announce a starter for next Friday's home game against Atlanta, a slot Wainwright could take.
