Pena a late scratch from Rays lineup

Maddon concerned about first baseman, adjusts game plan

ST. PETERSBURG -- Carlos Pena was scratched from the Rays' lineup approximately 30 minutes prior to Friday's game.

Pena exited Game 1 of the American League Division Series on Thursday after the second inning with blurred vision in his left eye. The Rays first baseman scratched his cornea at his home Wednesday night and said following Thursday's game that his vision had returned about 90 percent.

Pena participated in Friday's pregame batting practice and told the media he thought he was good to play. Rays manager Joe Maddon, however, wasn't so sure.

"If there's any concern that it will be inappropriate," Maddon said, "we will do something else."

In place of Pena, the Rays moved switch-hitting Willy Aybar -- originally the designated hitter -- to first base and put outfielder Rocco Baldelli in the DH spot. Rookie Fernando Perez took Baldelli's spot in right field.
