Stakes are high for Torre on Saturday

Manager has sights set on NLDS sweep, Belmont win for colt

LOS ANGELES -- Are the planets aligned for Joe Torre or what?

Champagne will be on ice Saturday night at Dodger Stadium, where a win over the Cubs would give his Dodgers a sweep of their National League Division Series.

And hours earlier at Belmont Park in New York, a colt Torre co-owns goes to the post in one of the most prestigious races of the year for 2-year-olds.

The name of the race?

The $400,000 Champagne Stakes.

A win by the Dodgers puts them into the NL Championship Series with a shot at a World Series championship. A win by Vineyard Haven puts him into the Breeders' Cup Juvenile with a shot at the 2-year-old championship. What kind of win parlay is that?

"Wouldn't that be sweet?" Torre said. "That would be unbelievable."

Baseball is Torre's vocation, but owning thoroughbreds is a passion. Torre has partial ownerships in about a dozen horses, most of them, like Vineyard Haven, in the barn of Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel.
