Armstrong, Saguaros edge Scorpions

Bases-clearing double vaults Peoria past Scottsdale in opener

Cole Armstrong hit a three-RBI double and Chad Huffman homered and scored twice as the visiting Peoria Saguaros bested the Scottsdale Scorpions, 9-3, on Tuesday night to wrap up Opening Day in the Arizona Fall League.

White Sox catching prospect Armstrong cleared the bases with his two-bagger to right field in the four-run ninth inning. He went hitless in four at-bats out of the cleanup spot until the final frame. Armstrong hit .261 with 29 doubles, 48 RBIs and 39 runs in 99 games between the Triple-A Charlotte Knights and the Double-A Birmingham Barons in the regular season.

Huffman (Padres) kick-started his AFL campaign by homering in the first. He hit .284 with nine homers, 68 runs and 58 RBIs over 119 games with the San Antonio Missions in the Double-A Texas League during the regular season.

Shane Robinson (Cardinals), Mets prospects Dan Murphy and Shawn Bowman, and Ian Desmond each had two hits. Desmond drove in a run and scored once, Robinson and Murphy each had an RBI and Bowman added a run.

Mets right-hander prospect Tobi Stoner (1-0) picked up the win after allowing an earned run on three hits and a walk, fanning two, in two frames. Starter Cory VanAllen (Nationals) gave up two runs -- one earned -- on three hits without a walk and two strikeouts in two innings.

Mark Trumbo (Angels) collected a game-high three hits with an RBI and a run scored and Chris Johnson (Astros) doubled in a run for the Scorpions.

Angels righty prospect Robert Mosebach (0-1) was tagged for three runs -- one earned -- on two hits, a walk, a wild pitch and a throwing error on a pickoff attempt in one inning for the loss. Barret Browning (also Angels) gave up four runs on six hits in one inning.
