Furcal makes a difference on bases
Dodgers shortstop runs through stop sign to score in Game 4
By Anthony DiComo / MLB.com
Trailing, 2-1, the Dodgers found some offense when Furcal walked to open the fifth inning and Andre Ethier singled him to second. Manny Ramirez then lined a single to left field, where Pat Burrell fielded it cleanly and came up firing.
Furcal, charging toward third base, completely ignored third-base coach Larry Bowa's stop sign. Instead, he rounded third at full speed and ran home, where his foot slid over the plate before catcher Carlos Ruiz could apply a tag.
That hit tied the game at 2 and gave the Dodgers an added spark. Because the Phillies could not cut off Burrell's throw, Ramirez advanced to second base and Ethier to third. The next batter, Russell Martin, hit into a run-scoring groundout -- which could have been an inning-ending double play had Furcal not run home.
After the game, neither Furcal or Bowa were available for comment.
