Torre cancels Dodgers' workout

Manager feels players will benefit from day off before Game 5

LOS ANGELES -- After Monday's crushing 7-5 loss in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series, Dodgers manager Joe Torre scrapped the scheduled Tuesday workout. The Phillies held their Dodger Stadium workout as originally planned.

"It was a very emotional game last night. Guys were down," Torre explained. "And it was just based on the fact that just get away from it for a day and just get your thoughts back and come back out here on Wednesday and just be ready to play. I just thought that just getting away from it would be better than just coming out here and taking batting practice.

"[Hitting coach Don] Mattingly and I talked yesterday before the game. Batting practice at this point in the season just becomes habit more so than anything else. I just thought getting away from it would probably benefit them more than anything else."

Torre, the only Dodger to participate in the off-day media conference, said the only change he anticipates in the Game 5 lineup is returning Matt Kemp to center field against Phillies left-handed starter Cole Hamels. Kemp was replaced in the Game 4 lineup by Juan Pierre, who had a single, double and scored a run in four at-bats.

Kemp was 1-for-4 against Hamels in Game 1 of the series, leading off the fourth inning with a double and scoring one of two Dodgers runs on Blake DeWitt's sacrifice fly. Kemp walked as a pinch-hitter in Game 4, remained in the game and also lined out. For the series he's 3-for-12 with four strikeouts and three walks.
